About Armenia

Armenia is a small country that connects Europe to Asia. It was one of the major powers, the third largest state in the Near East, after the Roman Empire and Parthia over 2000 years ago. Now Armenia is a modern country with nice and talented people, ancient history, thousands of historical monuments, rich culture, traditional hospitality, delicious and healthy food, beautiful nature and safe environment. Armenia is located between the Black and the Caspian seas. Bordering countries are Georgia from the North, Azerbaijan from the East, Iran from the South and Turkey from the West. Armenia is an independent democratic country with a population of around 3.2 million. It is a predominantly Christian country. Armenia has a good record of international, intercultural, religious as well as political, civil and social tolerance.

There are thousands of sights in Armenia and each of them is more impressive and memorable than the other. However, anyone who has visited this country will first of all and forever remember the most majestic and the noblest scene in this world, the fabulous view of Holy Mount Ararat. The Bible says about this mountain: "And on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat." (Genesis, 8:4). During the great flood, after floating on waters for 150 days, the Noah’s ark stopped on Mount Ararat. And on this very day, the human race was granted a second birth in Armenia: on Mount Ararat. Ararat is a blessed Mountain for Armenians. This mountain that has a miraculous beauty is a symbol of motherland for every Armenian leaving in any corner of the world. Ararat is a holy pilgrimage destination for the whole world.

Matenadaran, with its solemn facade facing Ararat, was built in 1959 and has one of the world’s largest manuscript collections in the world and has the largest collection of Armenian manuscripts. It has over 17 000 units. Some of the most impressing items in Matenadaran are the Msho Charentir, the largest manuscript that weighs over 27 kilos and the tiny church calendar of 1434 which not bigger then a passport photo and which weighs only 19 grams. Many manuscripts with Armenian miniature done with Armenian Red, a magnificent dyestuff discovered in ancient Armenia are exhibited in Matenadaran. This special paint was first documented to exist in 714 B.C. and was made from worms peculiar only to Ararat plain. The Armenian Cochineal was used in rugs and in miniatures, which maintain their vivid color even after centuries.

Situated 20 km away from Yerevan, the ancient town of Echmiadzin is the spiritual and administrative center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians and the place, where chrism is consecrated for christening every Armenian child. The name of the town is translated as "the place where the Only Begotten Son of God descended". The town (then called Vagharshapat) was founded in the first half of the II century. Starting 163 AD, after destruction of Artashat by the Romans, it was declared the new capital of ancient Armenia becoming its cultural, political and religious (since 1441) center for several centuries. The stones of Mother See of Echmiadzin are the contemporaries of the fall of Rome and Byzantium, witnesses of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, coronation of many Armenian kings and so on...

Like many other Armenian towns, Garni is a keeper of ancient history secrets as well: long ago, in IV-III cc BC, a fortress serving as a residence for Armenian kings towered over the town with palaces, kings' main apartments, dwellings, a church and a bath-house inside. The oldest surviving building in Armenia is the Temple of Sun situated at the highest point of the former fortress. This temple, built in the second half of the I century AD, was dedicated to one of the deities of Armenian pagan pantheon, Mitra the Deity of Sun. The adoption of Christianity in Armenia in 301 AD resulted in the destruction of pagan temples. However, this one standing in the kings' residence was fortunately not encroached upon by the preachers of new religion. 7 km to the north-east of Garni, further up the Azat river gorge is the town of Geghard, famous for its rock architecture and the church carved inside the rock. The exact time when the church was founded is not known; most probably Ayrivank (i.e. the Cave Monastery) was in this place in the beginning of the 4th century, which was later renamed into Geghard. Today’s name of the church comes from a legend. According to it a spear (geghard in Armenian) was kept here with which Jesus Christ was pierced on the cross by one of the Roman legionaries guarding him. The Geghard Monastery makes a strong impression with its rough simplicity and splendor seemingly borrowed from surrounding scenery – equally severe and beautiful. The monastery is as majestic from inside as from outside: the twilight of the rocky interior illuminated only by the weak candle flames and the scattered sunrays from the vaulted window on the carved ceiling, and the gentle murmur of water flowing down the walls add a special mystery to it. One of the monastery’s outside walls is covered with small hollows where the visitors try to throw stones for luck.

Lake Sevan, known in the ancient times as the Geghama Sea, is the "blue-eyed beauty" of Armenia. Being one of the biggest highland freshwater lakes in the world it is 1900 m above sea level. It was formed as a result of volcanic activity in the Geghama mountain range: the erupted lava blocked the riverbed; and melted ice from ice-houses and river water began to accumulate in the formed hollow. Later the flow of water cut through the reservoir wall in the direction of river Hrazdan. In 1938, after the adoption of a decision to use the lake water for hydro energy, irreversible damage was caused to the lake: resulting from the lowering of the level of water its composition and oxygen balance changed, many fish species were irretrievably lost and Sevan Island turned into a peninsula connected with the land by an emerged shoal. Now Sevan Peninsula, with its two 9th century churches adding a romantic touch it, is the best place to admire the beauty of the lake.
